Choosing Practice
Management Software
for the LAST Time

by John Lee

If you’ve done much software hunting, you’ll likely agree it’s a jungle out there. Let’s start with the fact that choosing software to manage your optometry practice is a big decision not a small one. We’re not talking about buying a home computer and a few games. Your office is a mission-critical healthcare environment; it matters a lot if the system crashes or you lose data. Complete practice-management (PM) and electronic medical record (EMR) software moves well beyond the front desk into every nook and cranny of your business; it affects everything. So let’s elevate this matter at least to the level of purchasing a very expensive piece of exam lane hardware. It certainly deserves the same kind of attention and will have a greater impact on the overall success of your business.

Tip #1:  Think partnership not purchase

How many times do you want to purchase a practice management system? It can be costly to purchase multiple software products until you find one that is satisfactory. It makes much more sense to make a one-time purchase by entering into a practice-management partnership. Remember, the software is a means not an end. It is simply a tool that you should deliver business solutions for years to come. Learning to use the tool well is a process.

As in a life partnership, a practice-management partnership requires commitment. We know heading into it that there will be a honeymoon period followed by some serious challenges...
