A wise man once taught me that a good staff can always overcome a poor doctor, but a good doctor can never overcome a poor staff. Therefore, it is imperative that your practice operates with a happy and efficient team. There must be excellent communication, cohesiveness among everyone in the practice, and a management system that distributes power and responsibility among the staff members – the Team Matrix System. Communication Communication seems easy enough at first, but when you get right down to it, most practices are lacking in this area. It may be the staff members’ uneasiness with presenting ideas to the doctor and therefore creating the illusion to the doctor that everything is fine. Or perhaps it’s the common occurrence of only a few staff members knowing the doctor’s instructions while every other staff member feels as if they are left in the dark. The best way to introduce an inviting communicative atmosphere is to be consistent with your instructions and hold weekly staff meetings – no matter the size of the practice. In order to fully benefit from these meetings, encourage staff members to participate. It is recommended that these meetings only last an hour. So be precise and stay on track. The key to keeping business meetings concise and efficient is utilizing communication in all of its forms both inside and outside of the meetings... |
