Generation Y:
The Millennials in
Your Organization

Standing in line at the bookstore last week, I began to read the back of her t-shirt. “We are Generation Y” the text began. “Kids these days…” It’s a line that has been said by every generation about a younger generation at every time in history. So who are the “kids” of today?

Who is this Generation Y?

Although there is some dispute over the exact birth dates that define Generation Y, they are born roughly between 1979 and 2000, and are the largest generation since the Baby Boomers. They have various other labels such as the Internet Generation, the Digital Generation, the Nintendo Generation, Nexters and, in Canada, the Sunshine Generation. But after several thousand of this generation responded to an ABC News online survey about what they wanted to be called, “Millennials” was the winner.

The Millennial’s ease with technology is what really distinguishes them from earlier generations. They have lived in a wired world. Hours are spent on personal online networks such as MySpace and Facebook sharing information. All that time spent social networking has created a focus on information sharing. As a result, they have become the most collaborative and team oriented generation the world has seen for many decades...
